Unfortunately, EPA and Vermont guidance recommends leaving vermiculite alone and assume that it contains asbestos. Approximately 80% of all vermiculite originated from a mine in Libby, Montana. Asbestos-containing veins were present at the mine and, as a result, much of the vermiculite from this mine was contaminated with asbestos.
